Class Summary: Whether you're new to the business or are looking to refresh your skills, audition technique is an essential tool and one that needs to be kept sharp. This class will focus on how to navigate the high pressure environment of auditions and give you the confidence to be your best in the room.
Patrick Mulvey and Marika Engelhardt are not only professional working actors, but also commercial and film producers, bringing a unique perspective that provides valuable insight from the actor as well as the casting director perspective.
Class Topics include:
- Audition technique for commercial and film roles
- Focusing on the work and booking "the room", not just the job
- Quick and efficient script analysis
- Improvising within the script
- Cold read techniques
- Challenges of adapting theatrical training to on camera work
- Distinguishing between and prepping for different styles
(ie. network television single cam or multi cam, indie film, commercials etc.)

Instructors - Special Guests from Chicago:
Patrick Mulvey received his Bachelor's degree from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama where he was awarded the James Bridie medal for best actor. He starred on the BBC series River City and worked with the National Theatre of Scotland and the Globe Theatre in London. Other theatre credits include TimeLine theatre, the Goodman Theatre, and Broadway in Chicago. He went on to play Tony in the nine-time Tony award-winning Billy Elliot the Musical on Broadway. He has also appeared in Cirque de Soleil's production of Baz Luhrmann: For the Record. Recent television credits include CSI: NY, NCIS, Chicago Fire, and Fox’s The Mob Doctor. He was recently recurring on the hit shows Empire, Chicago PD, and Starz's the Girlfriend Experience. He is a director at 5by12 films, a full service film and commercial production company.

A proud Portland, OR native, Marika Engelhardt received her MFA from DePaul University in Chicago. She has worked with various theatres including The Goodman theatre, A Red Orchid, Chicago Dramatists, and the Comedie Francaise in Paris. Television credits include The Chi, Empire, Chicago Med, Chicago Fire, and a recurring role on the Amazon series Patriot. Commercially, she has voiced many radio spots including national campaigns for McDonald’s and KFC. On camera campaigns include Sears, Samsung, Illinois Tourism, and Hyundai. She teaches on camera acting and audition technique at Vagabond School of the Arts in Chicago, and is a Producer at 5by12 films, a full service film and commercial production company.
